Box 944209 Sacramento, CA 94244 Ken Wiessman Marina Life Protection Act 1416 9th Street, Suite 1311 Sacramento, CA 95814 Subject: Implementation of a Marine Protection Area In Redondo Beach Dear Governor Schwarzenegger, Senator Oropeza, Assemblymember Lie, President Gustafson, and Mr. Wiessman: The City of Redondo Beach is home to some of the most beautiful marine life and ecosystem in Southern California. Redondo Beach is also home to some of the most productive coastal businesses that range from day long fishing trips to its surrounding ports and harbors. I understand the need to protect vital marine life and the delicate ecosystem that make our area so pleasant. However, I am urging you to take into consideration the cross section of businesses that stand to be impacted by the implementation of a Marine Protection Area (MPA). Our marine life and its ecosystem are natural wonders to our area and should be treated as such. By designating an MPA close to King Harbor and surrounding ports, vital jobs and businesses will be at jeopardy. I believe this would restrict both commercial and recreational fishing and have direct impact on the business community and tourism. Specifically, I am seeking your help in protecting the local economy, saving jobs, and maintaining recreational opportunities by supporting the following options: 1. Ensure that the placement of any State Marine Reserve prohibiting all fishing be located at least 8 miles from King Harbor; or, 2. Maintain the existing Marine Protected Area that closes commercial fishing in the entire Santa Monica Bay; or, 3. Require any new Marine Protected Area near King Harbor to fall under the classification of either a State Marine Park or State Marine Conservation Area allowing recreational fishing.
